Many people faced prolonged unemployment during the pandemic. Certain industries and communities were hit particularly hard and remain vulnerable to long term economic scarring. As the pandemic recovery begins, policymakers must address the barriers to those looking to return to the workforce – particularly for the most vulnerable.
Boosting employment is also crucial for the levelling up agenda. Increased employment will provide the economic security so many need and boost national productivity and growth. For ‘levelling up’ to be truly successful we must invest in not only the regions, but also the people who live and work there.
This panel event at Conservative Party Conference will consider how best to help people back into work. It will be a chance to consider the tools and programmes available to policymakers to help those communities that are most impacted by persistent unemployment, and fill vacancies more quickly.
