Digital addiction and social polarisation driving young people towards authoritarianism, new Onward research shows

On September 1st, Onward published The Kids Aren’t Alright, which explains why young people are detaching from democracy and social norms – and what to do about it.

The report warns that rising loneliness among young people is driving a generational slide away from democracy and social norms and towards atomisation and authoritarianism. Nearly half of millennials believe that army rule would be a good way to run the country, for example, triple the level a decade ago.

The Independent reported on Onward’s call for a new national civic service scheme to make it easier for young people to build connections, in order to address these concerning trends.

Will Tanner, Director of Onward, wrote for the FT warning that Britain’s Conservatives will not be immune from discontented young people moving to the authoritarian right.
