Gareth Davies MP writes for Times Red Box about how to scale social investment in the UK, following his paper for Onward on the same subject. He writes:
“Put simply, in order to truly mobilise private investment, the [social investment] sector needs to be defined as much by its potential to generate returns as its social outcomes. Until now, the focus within the sector has been too skewed towards a potential investment’s social mission, rather than profitability.
This has precluded the biggest institutional and mainstream investors that require a certain level of return from participating, no matter how worthwhile the social outcomes achieved.”
