This is a critical moment for Science and Technology in the UK. Politicians from both Government and opposition are increasingly focussing on the role that science can play in increasing economic growth, creating better jobs, improving the country’s international standing and solving social problems. The new Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology is the vehicle to champion this agenda, while new institutions like ARIA provide an opportunity to turn our science ambitions into reality.
In a short period, Onward has established itself at the fore of the science policy debate. We’ve published papers on the strengths and weaknesses of the UK’s science ecosystem, briefing notes on specific policy areas like R&D tax credits, and pamphlets bringing together leading voices on topics like Horizon Europe. We have hosted speeches from the Science Minister George Freeman, Shadow Culture and Digital Secretary Lucy Powell, and leading industry figures like Sir John Bell and Baroness Blackwood.
We are now looking for an outstanding individual to become a Senior Researcher in our Science Superpower programme. The successful candidate should have at least two to three years’ experience writing high quality research, ideally in science and technology policy. They should be comfortable conducting quantitative analysis using large datasets, and communicating complex ideas in short, sharp written form. And they should be excited about working in a political environment, where ideas need to cut through into the Westminster debate.
Main responsibilities
- Contribute to a high quality research programme, including analysis, drafting, editing, and developing practical, ambitious policy ideas.
- Conduct novel and rigorous data analysis – including polling analysis and economic modelling, using Stata and other tools.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders at the highest levels of government, the media, industry and among the policy community.
- Fundraise for ongoing research, including through sponsored events and philanthropic fundraising from individual donors and grant foundations.
- Plan and deliver Onward events, including roundtables, panels, and policy workshops.
- Produce regular articles for newspapers, websites and other outlets.
