On Tuesday 15th June, Onward was delighted to host a panel event titled Social Contract: The relationship between business and society after the crisis.
The coronavirus crisis has challenged our understanding of the relationship between business and society. On the one hand, businesses went to extraordinary lengths to support the national effort. On the other hand, companies that have issued dividends or claimed tax reliefs and furlough while making profits have been sharply criticised, or forced to hand back billions to the taxpayer.
In light of the recently published government consultation on audit and corporate governance reform, the panel will discuss what denotes good corporate behaviour in the UK, how the coronavirus crisis might have reframed this and how government and businesses should work together to enhance long-term value creation.
