  2. Digital and Events Internship

About Onward

Onward is the most exciting new thinktank in Westminster. Our mission is to renew the centre right for the next generation by coming up with bold new ideas and reaching out to new groups of people. 

Our team has worked in the highest levels of government and existing thinktanks and we have the networks and experience to turn ideas into practical, popular policies that work. Since we launched 18 months ago we have published 15 research reports, influenced numerous government policies, hosted 25 Cabinet Ministers, built a network of 1,000 young people and averaged 4 mentions in national media a week. 

Our advisory board includes leading parliamentarians, business people and former government advisers, including Lord Finkelstein (Chairman), Martyn Rose, Rachel Maclean MP, Gillian Keegan MP, Tom Tugendhat MP, John Lamont MP, Neil O’Brien MP, Lord O’Shaughnessy, Baroness Rock, Baroness Fall, Craig Elder, James Kanagasooriam, Sian Hansen and Nick Faith.

 

Finance and Office Manager (Part-time)

We are looking for an experienced manager to oversee the Onward office and finances. You will join a small tight-knit team that punches above its weight and help us scale further. We expect the role to be part time, and welcome applications from part-time and flexible workers and people returning from parental leave. You will be based at Onward’s offices in 4 Millbank in Westminster. 

Your responsibilities will be split between two key functions:

  1. Management of the Onward office

You will be in charge of day to day office services by organizing office operations and procedures. This includes:

  • Managing office correspondence especially postal
  • Dealing with landlord enquiries and working with Westminster Council on understanding and monitoring business rates
  • Getting quotes for best value, reviewing and approving all supply purchases for Onward
  • Designing and maintaining filing systems
  • Maintain printer and other office equipment and furniture
  • Maintain office efficiency by planning and implementing office systems, layouts, and equipment procurement.
  • Keep management updated on any new processes and office procedures
  • Oversee the onboarding of new staff members including office processes and staff handbook. Keep staff up to date on new processes and offer ongoing training. 
  • Contribute to team effort by helping to organize staff functions 
  • Help set up and attend some Onward events
  • Manage and keep an accurate register of staff holidays 
  • Manage and advise on staff expense claims 

2. Management of Onward’s finances

You will be responsible for the day to day financial health of Onward. Together with bookkeeper, you will be responsible for producing financial reports and help develop strategies to bring financial stability to the company.  You will also provide accurate and timely information to management and board directors to enable better decision making for both the long and short term. 

This includes:

  • Accurate monitoring of the day-to-day financial operations within the company, such as monthly payroll, invoicing (to individual donors, corporations and Trusts and Foundations) and supplier invoices, expense claims and payments
  • Oversight of all rent, service charges and rates in connection with office premises
  • Work with outside organisations such as accountants, bookkeeping services and banks for tax preparation, auditing, banking and other financial needs as necessary
  • Track the company’s financial status and performance to identify areas for potential improvement
  • Seek out methods for minimising costs and financial risk to the company
  • Monitor donations and aid donor management by monitoring donor requests, receipts and thank you correspondence 
  • Provide necessary financial information including monthly management accounts and six month cash flow forecasts to CEO and board directors to aid in long-term and short-term decision making
  • Review financial data and work with accountants to prepare annual reports
  • Present financial reports to board members and management (and perhaps potential donors)  in formal meetings
  • Stay up to date with technological advances and accounting software to be used for maintaining sound financial processes
  • Establish and maintain financial policies and procedures for the company including controls and sign off processes
  • Understand and adhere to financial regulations and legislation.
  • Maintain petty cash

Onward Digital and Events Internship

We are looking for outstanding candidates to join Onward’s six-month digital and events internship starting in late-November or early December. 

You will help shape and deliver a high quality programme of engagement through social media, digital and live events. These will be fun, unconventional and build Onward’s brand and network among key audiences, especially younger generations of voters and our growing business leaders network.  

You should ideally have:

– Relevant experience and a proven track record of digital campaigning or social media management

– Experience helping to manage events with high level stakeholders 

– An affinity with Onward’s mission and values

Extra points for:

– A desire to get stuck in, learn quickly and take ownership of projects

– Ability to capture the zeitgeist for maximum reach and impact

– Strong knowledge of and interest in politics

Salary: National Living Wage

Commitment: Six months, Full-time, based in Westminster

Policy Internship

We are looking for outstanding candidates to join Onward’s six-month policy internship starting in late-November or early December. 

You will work closely with Onward’s research team to develop new ideas for the country’s greatest social and economic policy challenges. The role is suited to ambitious individuals looking to gain experience in social and economic policy and contribute to the political debate in Britain at a time when politics is profound and important ways. 

You should ideally have:

– Relevant experience and a proven track record, at university or elsewhere

– Excellent writing and intermediate data analysis skills

– An affinity with Onward’s mission and values

Extra points for:

– A desire to get stuck in, learn quickly and take ownership of projects

– Experience with Stata (or equivalent) and Tableau

– Detailed understanding of a policy area linked to Onward’s mission

 

Salary: National Living Wage

Commitment: Six months, Full-time, based in Westminster
